Boot up problems - looking for logs

I have an intermittent problem where my XP pc sometimes does not start.
It goes through the bios startup, then a bunch of text scrolls on the
screen. At the point it normally switches to graphical mode and shows the XP
loading bit, it just shows a blank screen. I think it may have switched to
graphical mode because the monitor resyncs.
However that's as far as it gets - a black screen.
I then press the rest button on the PC and it reboots. A screen shows saying
that there was a problem booting. I then just do a normal boot. Most of the
time, this second attemp works and the bootup sequence continues normally.
It is likely that I have some sort of hardware issue - perhaps with the
video card.
I want to know if there is any way I can see a log of some sort of the
failed boot - one that is not subsequently overwritten by the successfull
boot. Is there some setting I can activate to have detailed logging? I'm
after any ideas.
Thanks in advance

Ive been having the same probelm with this windows XP..do you use the Nvidia
Video card? Zone Alarm?

Any way to access the error log, Click "start", clicks "tools", Click "advanced
system information"....there on that menu you can access an "error log".

I have had the same problem, to wit my computer goes
black just after the Windows XP screen about one third of
the times I start up. Sometmes I get the text page
giving me the chance to start normally, and sometimes
this works, sometimes I get a black screen and have to
manually reboot, which usually gets me the text page
again and I then reboot in safe mode, shut down from
there and restart. The restart is usually normal. Any
idea what gives here?

Depends on what your computer setup is like. I posted this probelm on another
board "microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers " and got a very good response.

It said the obvious, that some of the data for the windows Xp was damaged or
missing and that I could repair the damage, or re-install Windows XP!

Windows Xp comes with a utility that does that. I did it,it something like You
boot from the install disk, hit enter , then f8, then R for repair. The
procedure went okay but, "Surprise"... my modem quit working, or at least the
modem was physically operational, but there was some software disconnect, so the
ISP software said my modem wasn't working, even when I re-install the ISP
software. A disconcerting development!! Plus my computer stated bugging out
again, and I have a black screen. I decided do just reformat that drive and
start it over again...just make sure you back up any stuff your don't want to
lose that all I can say. Now I've got to download all those security updates
again. Still having slight probelms though, mouse occassionally freezes on boot
up...when I tried to install newest Nvidia driver , I got the black screen, boot
up probelms. Zone alarm is also looking suspicious.
