On my laptop, I have XP Pro, when I turn it on it goes into a DOS mode that
says PRE-BOOT EXECUTION ENVIRONMENT (PXE) v2.1
PXE-E61 Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF Exiting PXE ROM
press any key when ready

When I press any key, it goes through the same process again and again.
Can someone help me?

Have you checked to make sure the drives are seated firmly into the slots?
It sounds like it's not finding a drive based on what it is saying (media
test failure check cable). I'd check your drives and also make sure there's
no disks in the floppy or CD.

All of the cards are seated properly and there is no discs in the disc drive.
Before this started, I turned my computer on after it had been sitting in the
case for a few days, and it went into safe mode automatically, made some
clicking noises, and then went into windows. The next time I turned it on, it
automatically went into disc check, went all the way through the process
until it got to #5, free space verification, and went all the way to 92%
complete and stuck there and the hard drive started making the loud clicking
noise. It would not go any farther than 92 %. I shut it down, re-started, and
that is when it started doing what I had posted earlier.

Sounds like the hard drive is kaput!

Is the laptop a member of a network? If so-has software been installed
locally or through the network? Did you try safe mode?
PXE (now win PE) and PXE ROM, or cards,(provide for remote booting) are used
primarily by OEMs to deploy the OS to units in a production environment.

I can't get it to go into safe mode. As soon as I turn it on, it goes into
the mode I stated in the message.
