When I boot up my winxp sp2 laptop the process hangs (for between 2-3
minutes) on my wall paper (solid green color) - no icons or anything, just a
green screen. I've viewing this as an OS problem or is it a sign of a
component on the way to failville? I've run virus, spy, registry cleaners,
etc., with no sign of curing. Does anybody have a recommendation? thanks
for any help!

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? Could your
problem be a virus scan initiated on starting your computer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thank you both for your quick responses and suggestions. Nass: under
hkey_local_machine...polices/active desktop - I don't have an active desktop
category (it does exist under Current User). Gerry: under event viewer it's
showing a problem with Trend Micro Proxy Service not working. I used to have
Trend Micro on my computer but awhile ago uninstalled since it was such a
resource hog. I double checked: TM isn't listed in my programs, can't find
any reference to it in explorer, doesn't show in control panel add/remove
programs. There's obviously some leftover files from TM on my computer, any
advise on deleting/killing these? especially since I can't even find them???
thanks again for any advise.

Hi Lynn,

See if these articles can assist you with your slow boot up problem.

So, what Anti-Virus you have installed on your computer now!, did you
scanned for malware and viruses?.
What your operating system version?, is it XP Home or XP professional?.
You can search for the TM left over files/folder by searching for them or
download this tool to remove left over debris from old uninstalled
application, please read the help file before using it:
http://www.ccleaner.com

Go through these cleaning steps to see or get a clear opinion on how
clean your machine is:
= Click Start >> Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.

Click Connection Tab, then click on LAN settings button, make sure nothing
checked there and click [OK] to close the LAN settings properties.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
[ ] Disable script Debugging (internet Explorer) <= check this box
[ ] Disable Script Debugging (Other) <= check this box

Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
How to manage Add-Ons:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256

Run a scan from here on-line:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym
Download Avast Cleaner from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html

Run Disk Cleanup and Defrag in Safe Mode.
Open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you may need your XP CD installation media to
accomplish this operation.

Hi Lynn,

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Is the 'Trend Micro Proxy Service' listed in Services?

If you do not have any Trend Micro products installed and the 'Trend
Micro Proxy Service' is listed then delete the service. Double-click
'Trend Micro Proxy Service' to find the Service Name.

Open a Command Windows (Start > Run > cmd.exe) and issue the following
command:

sc delete "Service Name"

If you need help in deleting the 'Trend Micro Proxy Service' then
please post back.

sometimes when the
desktop is blank you
can do a ctrl alt del
to open the task manager.

in the second tab you
will likely find a
process in the listing
called:

explorer.exe

right click on it
then kill it.

then go to the first tab
and start a new task:

explorer.exe

then click enter.

if the trick above works
then the problem is not
critical.
