Boot up fails

My system will not boot up. It reaches the point where the memory is tested
and tells me it's OK. Then it hangs, when it should be checking the hard
drive and CD roms.
I have PC Chips board, Athlon XP 2000 cpu and 256 Mb of memory.
Is it the CPU, the motherboard or something else.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

There isn't any way for us to tell you which hardware component(s)
failed from a newsgroup post. I will say that PC Chips boards are not
known for being the greatest. Here are general hardware troubleshooting
steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

If it fails before Windows XP starts to load, that is before the first
Windows XP "splash screen" appears, then it is almost certainly a
hardware problem.

It is difficult to give a more precise diagnosis without checking out
the machine, especially if there is no error message or audible
failure signal (beeps) produced.

You may need to take it to a hardware repair technician.

Good luck

did you tamper with the boot fille in the harddrive if you did that could be
why and you will most likely have to re formate you hard driveunless you have
a backup bootfile than just replace the bootfiles

That sounds interesting, but is very unlikely to help the OP since his
system fails before the boot files for the operating system are even
called.

I am new to the newsgroup with little knowledge about the whole computer
system, only operation use.

I have almost the same booting up problem.

I am using windows 2000 professional edition. Athlon processor

The problem exist when I turn on my computer. After the window logo appear
there will be a stop message which read "inaccessible boot drive".

I tried to open the CMOS setting and change the boot setting and found the
CD ROM boot is not listed. As such, I cannot run the windows setup to re-load.

Previous to this, the computer will stop and send stop messages (IRQL not
less or equal for example) and start to dump and will re-start automatically
and it will be ok.

The computer is in good operation condition on its last shutdown. It was
properly shutdown.

Can somebody give advise.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Next time, please don't tack your post onto someone else's. It makes it
difficult to give both parties good help. You've got hardware failure.
Since you are a novice, take the machine to a professional computer
repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
