I'm running an XP system with SP2 and all updates current as of today.
Is there anything someone might steer me to that might be the cause of my
desktop icons appearing normally on the desktop as the desktop comes up,
then after a few seconds more, displaying a violent "jump" in place as
though something was "passing through" the desktop making them all jump
together then settle back and appear normally.
It's almost like the desktop takes a sudden "shock". They all seem to
disappear for a split second then settle down again. The HDD is active as
this takes place. It seems to happen just before the taskbar icons settle in
near the clock in the corner. Don't know if that's related or not.
Could this possibly be something associated with Windows Genuine Advantage
perhaps?? The RCN cable modem is open during the boot. Is this happening to
anyone else???
Thanks much
Dudley Henriques

Moving desktop items as you explained usually means a virus is in the OS,not
always,but 90% of the time.Run a anti-virus check,also in display properties,
desktop, customize, web, check the box "lock desktop items".

Andrew E. is a troll who gives bad advice at best, destructive advice at his
worst. Ignore him.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

In the meantime, things to try:

A. Update your video drivers. Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get
them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

B. Try MVP Kelly Theriot's fix here:

folder refresh, Line 157
