Hi all, I have put together a pc from bits and pieces its an AT - GA 5AA
mobo with an AMD K6 2 450 CPU I have put it all together properly but when I
go to install win 98 se a little bit into it a box in the middle of the
screen says

Boot Sector Write!!
Virus: continue (y/n)?

if I try to press y or n nothing happens and any other key dose nothing as
well. I have tried 3 hard drives they all get the same, is this a problem
with the bios and a virus or something else Im not aware of? do I have to
flash the bios or something and how. I can boot up with a floppy without a
problem and I tried fdisk to delete the hdd's partition but at the end it
came up with this message again but continued and then formated it. Whats
going wrong I have had this pc up and running before without a problem?

Thanks
Shaun

You should be able to disable virus checking in the BIOS setup. This
will prevent the error message. However, you want to make sure you
don't have a virus. Has the floppy disc you are using been in the
drive at all times when you've gotten the message? Maybe it has a
virus on it. Also if you are not using a legitimate 98 CD then it
could have a virus also.

search for boot sector virus on google groups and you'll find good
suggestions on how to go about solving the problem, including JAD's. i
recently had one and had to tweak the system a little.

There is a Boot Sector Write Protect enabled in the BIOS. You may find
this in the BIOS either as a Write Protect or Virus Protect/etc. What
it does is when something tries to write to the boot sector, it pops up
the warning you are seeing.

When you install Windows, it will modify the Boot Sector. The BIOS,
havcing the Virus Protect/MBR Write Protect enabled, pops up the
warning you are seeing.

Nothing is wrong and you don't have a virus. Turn off the option in
your BIOS until after you've installed Windows then turn it back on
again.
