While updating my bios I received a checksum error. The system then failed
to reboot into WindowsXP.
I was able to boot into DOS and reapplied the upadate successfully, but when
the reboot cycle gets to loading windows, I keep getting a message PRESS ANY
KEY TO REBOOT.

I have tried rebooting to Recovery Console and run FIXBOOT without any
success.
The problem appears to be something to do with the HDD from which I am
trying to boot. Its is an NTFS partition. Could it be due to a corrupted
MBR?
Any help will be appreciated

No nothing that simple I'm afraid. It turned out that the primary partition
from which the system boots up was HIDDEN. I booted into Partionmagic from
floppy and immediately saw the problem. I made it active again and hey
presto back to normal!
