Get message that primary hard disc drive 1 not found during start up. What
can I do? Step up has this drive set to auto.

Hi,

What does your system BIOS state about the drive? Is it recognized? It could
simply be loose cabling. Or, it could be a failed drive. I would start with
a basic drive diagnostic tool from the manufacturer if it is being properly
recognized in the system BIOS.

Consider getting the free Ultimate Boot CD:
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/

This is a large download (209 Meg) as an ISO file that you burn to CD via an
option like "burn from disk" from within Nero or Easy CD Creator. The
standard XP CD writing routines are probably not enough to convert the
download into a CD.

It contains several hardware diagnostic programs, including hard drive
diagnostic programs from most major hard drive manufacturers..

It contains tools to rewrite/fix the boot record, change partitions, etc..
