Boot problems?

I have a problem booting Win2K. I am using Win2K SP 4 on a PIII with
512MB Ram and a 40 Gig Maxtor hard drive.

The computer crashes & re-starts during the boot sequence, at any time
between clearing the CMOS settings screen to the very end of the Win2K
boot. It doesn't recur at any one particular time, and some days it
doesn't happen at all (rarely).

To fix it, I have to run either fixboot, fixmbr or chkdsk. Either one
does the trick. I don't have a boot sector virus that Norton can
detect. What is going on here, and how can I fix it? I bought a new
hard drive, because the problem got so bad I couldn't boot at all, but
now it's back. And it comes back not long after doing a clean
partition, format & re-install of Windows.

Help!

Since fixboot, fixmbr or chkdsk do different thing it likely is coincedence.
To be able to see the blue screen stop message; Control
Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery, I usually like to uncheck
"Automatically reboot" this way you get a chance to read the stop error.

If no BSOD's occur (Event ID: 1001 Source: Save Dump), then it may be a
power problem. I would look at a possible faulty (or undersized) pc power
supply, UPS, bad battery, or the circuit feeding the outlet that the pc is
plugged into.
