Boot problem

When I first turn on my PC or reboot it, after I get the black screen with
the Windows logo, I get a message that says "One of your disks needs to be
checked for consistency.....CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)."

When stage 1 gets to over 70%, another screen pops up (a dark blue color), a
screen which only lasts about 1/2 a second...I haven't been able to determine
what it says. Then the PC reboots again.

If I do not hit a key before CHKDSK runs, the whole process repeats. I've
let it reboot on its own up to 5 times....I'm sure it would continue if I do
not hit a key.

Any suggestions on what might be wrong and what to do about it?

Thanks,

Richard

I'd hazard a guess that there is a problem with the harddrive. You could
run the HD manufacturers diagnostics program on it, but I would make
VERY sure that the drive did not contain the only copy of anything/file
that I valued. (make a BACKup immediately)
