can be more specific on your senario, like now many
harddisks you have...etc

my best guess is that your harddisk is set to slave during
the installation of win2k.

A drive can't be read unless its partitioned and formated. A formatted drive
can't boot if no boot files are present in the primary active partition.
Obviously, if the primary partition isn't active, the bios won't recognize
the partition as bootable.

Boot to recovery console on the Win2K install disk and
use 'FIXBOOT'

That will create a new BOOT.INI and associated files for
your install, and should correct the problem.

I should note, if this doesn't work, try 'FIXMBR' which does the same
thing. 'FIXBOOT' works in WinXP, and may work in Win2K, but if it doesn't,
try the other 'FIXMBR' and see if that works.

Currently this Drive W-D brand is the onle hard drive in
computor. It is on the end of cable and jumpered as slave.
When I boot up, it lists Primar master as none and this
drive as slave. The computor will boot up and function
this way, When I change the jumper to master or single, it
will not start. I think the last time I tried, I got an
error message disk 1/o error 0000200. I have tried several
things and got various messages such as Invalid boo.INI
and failed to arcread partition for ( don't remember)
I have ran fixboot and fixmbr with no success. I am not
sure how the drive was jumpered when I did this, but I
think I had changed it to master or single.
Thanks for responding.

Tried that already.
thanks

Tried that,
Computor is running with no master and ths drive jumpered
as slave.
Could a bad cable cause this?

Drive is partitioned and bootable but onle as slave. There
is no other hard drive in computor.
When I boot up, it lists primary master as none and this
as slave. then boots and runs on this drive. Will not
start if I jumper this as single or master
Thanks

Change the cable, recheck the drive jumper settings and verify what the bios
detects. You may very well be dealing with faulty onboard electronics but
thats rare. You might also consider clearing the CMOS although obviously the
IDE controller seems to be operational.
