Boot Order Screwed UP

I cannot get my comp to boot first from a System CD. It used to but
something changed. I have to have the boot order that way to boot from
my Acronis Bsckup CD if my C: drive won't boot.

When I go into the setup using F2, it does show the CD first in line
with the number one in front of it, but that doesn't seem to matter.

Any suggestions?

The drive or the cable to it may have gone flakey.

The bios will skip items in the boot list that it decides arent
bootable, most obviously when there is no CD in the drive etc.

Possibly means the optical drive is not reading the CD.
Either the drive is crook or the cd is not readable by that drive.
Use Nero CD/DVD Speed to test readability.

The program said it - or the disk, couldn't read raw data and then
locked up the machine with a blank screen. Had to reboot.

The CD drive works perfectly except that I cannot get it to boot first
in the boot order. It's the original that came with the Dell. Maybe it
just needs to be reinstalled, but I cannot find the proper disk in my
Dell disks to do that. Maybe I'll just pop for a new CD/DVD drive and
see if that will cure things. I do need the ability to boot from my
Acronis True Image backup CD, othewise this problem wouldn't bother me.

Nope, that bios stuff is before any OS is even loaded.

See what Dell has to say about it, the bios may be
buggy in that read and you just need the latest bios etc.

I'd ask Dell first and check if there is a later bios available if you know how to do that.

The type of CD drive does not matter.
Maybe it

There is noc onnection between bootability and "installation".

Maybe I'll just pop for a new CD/DVD drive and
see if that will cure things.

Very unlikely. Basically will only help if the old drive is
broken.

I do need the ability to boot from my
Acronis True Image backup CD, othewise this problem wouldn't bother me.

You need to adjust the boot order in the BIOS or (more modern BIOS)
give it an alternate bood device. It is also possible, that
you BIOS just cannot boot the Acronis CD. Then only a BIOS upgrade
can help.

You have to change the order in the BIOS usually accessed by hitting del
when you are booting up but some computers have different ways of
entering the BIOS. When you are there it is usually the second on the
list after the one that gives you your drives and your time. You should
see it marked as boot order or something similar and you can choose any
drive you prefer to boot to first and eliminate any you don't want on
the list. Then you press f10 or save and exit.
