thanks a lot bill!
your suggestion worked.
sorry that i posted my question in the wrong community but i tried to fix

Your problem has nothing to do with Vista. The BIOS used for your
motherboard uses F8 to modify the boot device order. It's an issue of
timing. If you press F8 after the BIOS, then you will enter safe mode.
Bill's suggestion was very good. You might want to look at Superantispyware
(superantispyware.com). It provides a utility when you install
Superantispyware called Bootsafe. I haven't tried it with Vista, but it
sure beats pressing F8. Have a good one!

Agreed--the reason Engel didn't find anything that looked like perrykerrang
had posted is that it is manufacturer-specific (I can't say I've ever seen
it either!)

Regardless, once stuff that might be specific to a vendor is done, the
standard boot sequence has to commence.

Particularly if you use a wireless keyboard with your notebook as I do at
home. Being absent minded I forget to select F8 from the notebook - result?
No safe mode (or BIOS access for that matter), as the device drivers for the
wireless keyboard load too late in the boot sequence to have any effect.
