Boot getting VERY slow, XP Home

Hi Folks,

I have a 3-yr-old Sony Vaio laptop, FXA36, with a one-year-old HDD. My boot
has been slowing down lately. Sometimes it takes a half hour to get fully
into Windows now. Coming out of hiberation is a hit-or-miss proposition. If I
restore the system within a short time, the re-boot is fine, but if the
system sits for several hours, the restore from hibernation sometimes fails
(LSA Shell InPageError).

Updated anti-virus software gives the machine a clean bill of health, as
does SpyBot S&D. Chkdsk says there's no problems with the disk. Once Windows
starts, it works normally.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,

I've noted that a change was made in hardware to your laptop - you stated "a
one-year-old HDD". Was this done by an Authorized Sony Dealer Service
Representive or by you? This may be part of the problem. I'm also looking
"cross-eyed" at your Power Sources - i.e: Laptop Battery and possibly the RTC
(Real Time Clock/CMOS battery as possibly running low on juice or may be
dead?? This could explain the problems of your laptop coming out of S1 - S5
ACPI (hibernation). It may be time to get a new battery for the ol' laptop.

T.S.,

Thanks for the thoughts. The HDD was replaced by Sony under warranty. I'll
look into the CMOS battery issue. I should note that I use the computer much
of the time under AC power, so the main battery shouldn't be a factor (but
it's in good condition).

I appreciate your help,
Jerry
