Boot from USB key

I have an Asus A7V8X and would like to boot from my USB flash disk. I have
used a utlilty to format it in FDD, ZIP and HDD types, and installed DOS
system files, but despite trying both 'USB FDD' and 'USB ZIP' boot options
in the BIOS, I cannot boot from the disk. It seems to ignore it (the access
light does not flash before I get the 'no bootable disk found' error) - am I
doing something wrong or does this board simply not support USB flash
booting? I would find this odd as many computers are able to boot this way
by selecting USB ZIP in the BIOS.

I had tried with an Asus and an ECS board and could not get my PNY Attache
drive to boot. The system just hangs.

I have booted my P4C800-E Dlx board from a USB based Compact Flash Reader
(actually, it is a 6-in-1 device.) Worked great.

I have followed the instructions there and also used a Memory key boot
utility to automate the process and while the disk should be bootable I
just cant get the PC to boot from it. Any ideas? Has anyone with an Asus
board achieved this?

On the A7N8X, I think you can only boot from USB on a Rev2.0 board - you
might need to check to see if your board is actually capable of it, although
if the option is in the BIOS, I would expect it to be.

The board is an A7V8X v2.01 with latest official bios 1013. It just doesnt
seem to 'find' the USB key at boot - which is a PQI Travelling Disk USB
2.0 - I will try contacting Asus and see if they have any suggestions.

Have you actually set the boot order in the Bios?

Yes. Under Removable Devices I have set 'USB ZIP'. If I leave my HD
assigned, it always boots off that; if I disable the HD, it says 'no boot
device found'.

On the subject of USB flashdrives, which has the highest read / write speed,
the fastest I could find is JetFlash with the NAND memory.

Anybody have any info ?

Ben.
