'd like to have two hdd's with the same or different OS's on them
i'd like to find a way such that when i turn on my machine i have a
choice which one to boot from

here's why, i am happy with my current setup, one hdd with XP. i'd
like to explore using vista or linux and or even having xp on the 2nd
hdd, hence, wanting to be able to choose which hdd to boot from

hope that is clear enough

thank you

Google ?

That can be done without too much trouble, and the way that you want to
do it (with two hard disks) is the best way to go about it. What I
suggest to new comers to multi-boot environments is that they
temporarily disconnect their good operating system drive while they
install the experimental operating system, that way if things really go
bad you can still reconnect the good drive and continue using your
present operating system as if nothing had happened. Once the
experimental operating system is properly installed on the second hard
disk you can then bring in your good operating system into the picture.

You will have to use a different boot manager than the Windows XP one to
gain multi-boot ability with Vista or Linux. Which one you use will
depend on which second operating system you decide to use, if you decide
to try Vista then you will use the Vista boot manager to boot the
operating systems. If you decide to try Linux then you will use either
the Linux GRUB or Lilo boot loader.
