Boot from CD or DVD?

My Dell computer has both a CD and a DVD drive. The bios is set to boot
first from the CD then the HD. There does not seem to be any provisions to
boot from the DVD. Is it possible to do this without upgrading the bios?

This computer is several years old.

Suggestions appreciated.

What should happen when you try to boot from DVD is that the system should
first look at the CD drive find nothing then check the DVD drive...
does that not happen??

That does not seem to happen - it just continues on to load Windows XP

If so, that means that the DVD is not bootable

Go into BIOS setup and in the startup options area, look for a section that
lists the drives you have installed and select the DVD drive. Some BIOS's
will check each CD drive, some have a sub-option in BIOS to select the
specific CD drive to try and boot from, and will only check the one that is
selected.

I had this problem with my computer once.

What finally fixed it was to remove the CD and DVD drives. There was a
jumper block on the back of each with settings for Master/Slave/Cable.
Both were on the same ISA cable and the jumpers on both were both
originally set to "Cable". By changing one jumper to "Master" and the
other jumper to "Slave", it was fixed so that it would then boot from
either drive.

Normal operation: if CD is desginated in BIOS as first boot drive booting
from the DVD is also "set" - did you boot from the CD drive and then tried
to boot from the same CD inserted in the DVD drive?

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions - yes I will try them all.

The DVD disk is bootable on another computer.
