Hi im tearing my hair out, I have just got a raid ITE 8212 card with 2 Maxtor ata133 80gig drives, every 4-5 days or so I cant boot in because It says either my profile has gone and doesnt exist or c:windows\system32\config and another directory I cant remember is corrupt, I have tacken the ide drives off the card and put them into the mother board but the same thing happens, I have got service pack 1, its seems to me that it only happens when I switch the computer off as I have a program that can run windows checkdisk while in the operating system it cant fix but will tell me if there are any problems ...usualy saying problem with bitmap, anyway Im sure the hardives are asked to shut down to quikly im not sure but I never had this problem before I built the pc, its my 5th biult pc so I no what im doing.......if anyone can shed some light on this I would be eternaly greatfull thx

Have you looked at the support documents from the RAID web site?

Hi thx anyway but its not raid related, I have tacken the card out before now formated both drives and put them into the motherboard as i said before, and it makes no diffrence I still get the same problems, there is also raid on the board for SATA but I turned that off when I built the pc by moving the pins on the motherboard and thats fine as xp doesnt no its there as it shouldnt, I think it is program related I will just have to go through all the programs that I have never used on XP Pro before this pc was built thx anyway

Also when it gets bad it wont do a check disk when i boot in says 'cannot get direct access etc' then im stuffed because the problem gets to the stage below where it wont boot

Thx anyway I already no how to repair but wasnt enough as i needed to find out why it was happening in the first place, and now I no, I have been running this os on 3 other computers over last 3 or so years with no problem so it only left one thing and that was new programs that I used on this pc and none of the others turns out it was a utility i was using that was writing to the registry when the computer was trying to backup the registry for re boot, I unistalled the program and all errors have gone and stayed gone touch wood thx all anyway

It would seem that everyone has missed the obvious first step in diagnosing and fixing your problem. What do the event logs say? In your administrative tools in the control panel will be two logs that will help you locate what caused this. Applications and Systems. If you open either one you will see red Xs that when double clicked on will open a details window. Look for the red Xs that correspond to the time of your failure or problem. These windows will contain the name of the program or the module that conflicted. This should be your first step. Then look at your logs in the windows folder and see what failed or at what point the log records a failure. There may be many many logs to read. EventSystem.log will be one of your main ones . Good luck.

Exactly how are you supposed to check the event logs when windows won't boot up due to registry damage?
