Boot failure

This machine ran without problems for 2 years, and now
it's completely unreliable. The past few months have been
a pattern of crash, rebuild, runs great for a bit, then
crash, and start over--

I've had repeated problems with OS stability for several
months now and have rebuilt my machine many times. This
last boot failure is very frustrating since I just
replaced the CPU&MB thinking that heat might have created
a gremlin.

System runs fine for many days, then out of the blue fails
to boot. Sometimes I can recover using a rescue disk,
other times not. I've gone as far as booting from a WIN98
boot disk and formating the 40G disk from DOS including
repeatadly rewritting the boot sector. I've checked the
disk for bad sectors using a WD utility - no problems
found.

Other trouble steps include removing all cards (sound, and
NIC) and reintalling the OS with just the video driver,
slowly and over time adding other apps, OS patches, cards
and drivers. No problems with performance, machine is
fully functional, all is great for days and even weeks,
then just as soon as you think everything is fine-blue
screen at boot. The usual message is file corruption in a
system 32 file, such as:
Stop: c0000218 {RegistryFile Failure}
The regristry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not writable.

but there have been other errors as well.

Machine is a AMD XP 2000+
BlackIce FW
Symantec Antivirus

Anyone got any ideas?

This certainly sounds like hardware. Since you replaced the CPU and MB have
you replaced RAM, the Hard drive? Is the drive on any type of IDE/SCSI
controller. Usually Software hive corruption is from a bad disk possibly or
bad RAM. Sounds like you've replaced everything but the bad hardware
unfortunately.

My c0000218 problem began aftr installing an update to NAV
Small Business Edition. It ran for several months prior
on NAV 7.6 and then I updated two nights ago from 11/19
engine to an 11/26 engine and on reboot received the
c0000218 error.
