boot delays

I just did a fresh install of Windows XP SP2 on my laptop and I am
experiancing boot delays of about 5 min now before it reaches the
window splash screen. All I have installed so far are the system
drivers and all the up to date windows updates. What takes up about
4.5 of the 5 min is that screen you normally see after you bring
windows out of a hibernate state, with the grey blocks that act as a
progress bar. Needless to say that bar takes forever to make it across
the screen before windows begins to load. Any insight, helpful hints,
or suggested software to fix this?

Thanks!

How long does safe mode take to load?
Have the latest drivers installed from the manufacturer of each hardware
device - not from windowsupdate...?
Anything in the event log?
