I think I figured it out ...
I used your Explorer suggestion, moved all the folders and shortcuts
into IE Favorites, then exported as one html file. I copied the html
file and pasted to word. Then in Word I can cut and paste to sort the
bookmarks, eventually making one page for each category. Then I can
save each page as an html file. I don't need to load the html file
into my browser -- I can keep it in the folder with other documents
relating to that search content, and just open the html file and click
on the link I want.
So, I have a folder called LINGUISTICS with lots of documents. Now I
have added an html file with all of my linguistics bookmarks.htm. So
I can keep and access my bookmarks without cluttering up my browser
with links that I use only rarely.

|I wasn't using Internet Explorer to do it; that much I do know.

||There's an easy way to access the Favorites folder in Windows Explorer
||right from the Favorites menu in Internet Explorer 7. Here's how:
||
|| 1. ALT + Z
|| 2. Hold down the Shift key.
|| 3. Click the Organize Favorites command
||
||Now you'll be able to work with the Favorites folder from within Windows
||Explorer.
