I want to learn hardware. My idea is just to build a computer from scratch
and learn each component as I go.

Can someone recomend a good book ( or maby some FAQ's ) that will cover the
basics, and give me a start ?

Mike Meyers All in One A+ Certification Books are good. You dont have to be
studying for an exam to use them. Will tell you everything you need to
know.
I have Bigelow's Troubleshooting, Maintaining & Repairing PCs 5th Edition
ISBN# 0-07-213272-8
If you just want the basics those Dummies guides arent bad.

Take a look on EBAY see what you can find 2nd user.

For starters, try:
O'Reilly's PC Hardware in a Nutshell (Robert Thompson)
Build Your Own PC (Morris Rosenthal)
This is a relatively inexpensive pair that will get you started.

For a few $ more:
Upgrading and Repairing PCs (14th Edition) (Scott Mueller)

Avoid "Building a PC For Dummies". It overlooks too many important
issues in both component selection and assembly, while making way too
many assumptions about what may be best for you....

All avaialble on Amazon...along with quite a few others that I haven't
used or read...

Last mont, Maximum PC magazind had a special on building a PC,
including component speccing (albeit aimed at the power used). The CD
came with all sorts of goodies, including SP1a for Win XP (my primary
reason for buying it).
