Bogus entry in Add/Remove Programs

There is a program listed in my Add/Remove Programs for which I see no
evidence of it being on my system. Trying to remove it fails, and there
seems no way to delete it from the list. From where is this list assembled?

Often, if the program has been uninstalled already, trying to do so again in
Control Panel|ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS will tell you so, and offer to remove the
name from the list. If this isn't the case for you...
