Hi....

I have this folder full of drawings collected on the net for different
purposes.
Mostly I use them to freshen up my emails.

I'll fire up my Explorer and right-click on a BMP-file and the choose the
Open in... option and then I choose Internet Explorer in order to view it in
the Internet Explorer to be able to copy it into the clipboard from there,
but the file is always opened in Paint no matte what I choose to open it in,
even is I choose the fax and picture viewer.

How come?
Is there a registry tweak to rectify this?
So the BMP files is opened in the application I choose...
Is there a reason why the name of this software program starts with pain?
hehe...

Hi there,

You really don't want to use BMPs to "freshen up" your emails; they are huge
and will take a looooong time for the recipient to download. Much better to
use JPGs or GIFs.

Hi Zadig,

You can easily convert .bmp files to .jpg using "IrfanView", a free program.

Good Luck.

That's no answer to my question.

Should I conclude that there is no solution to this problem?

Open a folder, say my documents

tools>folder options>file types

See what bmp opens with.

In windows 2003 they changed it a bit but for earlier versions there should
be a button to change what it opens with, highlight the type and if you get
an advanced or edit button you should be able to choose a program to open it
with. Probably you have installed something that's changed the default
settings and windows is using one of the "Preferred" programs instead.

Your details are ambiguous and I don't have your OS
but here is a possible interpretation in XP.

In a File type association you can choose a default action.
The default action would then appear bolded.
I'm not certain but I suspect if there is no default action
the first one listed might be chosen. So if Edit is the first
action listed and Edit requires Paint to be opened
and you aren't specifying a particular action
(e.g. via right-click or via the Explorer window's File menu)
that would explain your symptom.

Hmm... in fact, when I right-click on a .bmp file in Explorer
the default action is Preview which isn't even listed in
Folder Options as one of the actions for File Type Bitmap Image.
(Mysteries...)

Is there a registry tweak to rectify this?
So the BMP files is opened in the application I choose...

I suspect that you may have messed up the default file type
by using that right-click override. In XP that could be repaired
by Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

Note: doing that restores to default file type associations for several
file extensions dealing with static images.

Have you in fact tried to specify an action for the file
or just tried to open it with a doubleclick or Enter?

Also sometimes you can get a set of alternate file actions
by pressing Shift- when right-clicking on the item
in an Explorer window.

What happens if you drag the file to an open window
of the application you want the file to be displayed by?

BTW I don't think that this really has anything to do with IE.
You may be able to get better assistance in a newsgroup
which specializes in your OS.

Good luck

I tried your advice, but unfortunately it didn't do the trick.
