I have a new Dell laptop with a high resolution display.
Display quality is great except when using IE. Most text
is fine; problem is with photos, graphics and some larger
font types, which are very blurry. I assume the problem
is with the settings for IE (v6.0 SP1).

Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Thank you!

The reason for blurry images is that IE6 is set up to resize the
images based on the Display DPI setting. Dell ships its Inspirons with
higher DPI than the default and set IE6 to resize the image.

You can either set the DPI to the default (Normal - 96) or remove
IE6's UseHR registry key to deactivite image resizing. Here are the
relevant information (from Microsoft Knowledge Base):

Images Scaling in Internet Explorer (hi-res)
============================================

How to Activate Scaling
Internet Explorer 6 and later automatically adjusts the scale on
higher resolution systems when the DPI setting is higher than 96 DPI
and the "UseHR" registry value is added to the registry. These are
usually done by the manufacturers of higher resolution systems.

Set the DPI
These are the steps for changing the DPI setting on your system.

Right-click the Windows desktop to display the context menu.
Click Properties on the context menu to display the Display Properties
dialog.
Click the Settings tab on the Display Properties dialog to display the
Settings tab.
Click the Advanced button on the Settings tab to display the monitor
properties dialog.
Select a DPI setting in the Display frame of the monitor properties
dialog to change the DPI setting.
Restart your system to allow the changes to take effect.
Add the UseHR Registry Entry
The UseHR value is added to the Main key under "Internet Explorer" as
follows:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Right Click in the right pane and select New | DWORD value and set its data
to 00000001

Same problem in a new laptop. If you get it fixed let me
know the answer. happy new year

I changed the DPI setting to normal (96) and it helped
somewhat but pictures still not as clear as I'd like.
Font is also very small.... smaller than I'd like it. I
decided to try the second option you mentioned about the
UseHR registry, but I don't understand the directions
below. Don't know what the "Main key" is, and when you
say right click in the right pane, I don't know what right
pane you're referring to. Help!

Be very, very careful doing this:
Go to Start | Run and type
regedit
and press <Enter>. In the left pane, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
In the right pane, look for the value
UseHR
If it is there, right click it and choose Modify, Set it to 1 (one).
If it is not there, left click on a blank spot in the right pane and choose
New. Choose DWORD and set it to 1.

Hi - I went into regedit as directed and in right pane
were three lines of data....

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
HTTP11SAVED REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
HTTP11SAVED_VAL REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

No mention of "UseHR" however. ????

As said in the original message:
