Hello Paul,

I hope you are good. I am close to wits end with Microsoft related to a
possible problem with Windows Vista.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 last year, and Windows Vista Home Premium came
fully installed.

From the first week of turning it on my computer crashed- with the same kind
of problem. I boutght my laptop at the end of oct 07. The problem was that
whenever it was on for extended periods of time the screen would just stick
and then there would be the bluescreen. It would not have any error messages
but just lots of ----and llll dashes on the screen. This would stay like
this for about 6 or 7 seconds then the computer would automatically restart.
Once it has restarted it will say that it didnt shut down properly and it
would check for solutions which it never finds.

I have spoken to Dell numerous times about this. I have ran hardware tests
and none of the hardware is failing. I have taken all the software off the
computer and then put everything back on, but to no avail the same problem
occurs.

I have taken off all the add-ons that came with the computer when I
uninstalled all the software so I dont think it relates to any of them.

Could you possibly suggest something or someone that I can contact. I have
also checked the Windows site but the bluescreen error messages they have are
all specific for e.g oxooo type errors which this one isn't. Dell say they
cannot really help me any further on the hardware side because there is no
specific error with the bluescreen.

I am at a loss of what I should do.

This seems to happen to me at least 3 times a week when I am using my
laptop. If I have had it on for a long period of time it can happen twice in
a day.

I would be very thankful for any advice that you could assit me on.

You are going to have to collect a little more information:
1. Any critical errors showing up in Event Viewer?
2. Any conflicts in Device Manager?
3. When this occurs, immediately reboot to BIOS and see what the CPU
temperature is doing.
4. Review the Minixxxxx.dmp file for any driver issues.

Hi Mark,

I am relatively new at all of the tools you mentioned below. I will the
actions I have done for you below.

1.There are two critical errors within Event Viewer and this relates to
Kernel-Power the computer not having enough power when trying to go to sleep.
I think both of those might have been me using the laptop without the
adapter cord plugged in.One was in Nov 07 and the other in Feb.

2.For device manager I looked at all the little + boxes and within the
device status for most of them it said they worked properly. I don't know
how to check for conflicts. Within system devices, one of the pieces of
hardware ATI I/O Communications Processor SMBus Controller no drivers have
been installed for that . No drivers are installed on direct memory access
controller, programmable interrupt controller, system speaker, numeric data
processor, system timer - which makes sense as the time on my computer never
seems to be correct and I always have to synchronize it whilst connected to
the net. I don't know if there is an easier way to check for conflicts?!?!

For points 3 & 4 I don't know how to reboot to BIOS. To access the memory
dump files - I couldn't get that done and the tech guy who took over my
computer who worked at Dell couldn't get it done either so I am not sure how
to open the Mini-dump files.

Thanks
Regards
Jeannette

1. Good job on the Event Viewer!
2. If there was a conflict, you would have seen text in the status box
stating there was a conflict.
3. Usually when you computer boots, there is an initial screen with either a
logo or some strange text talking about hard drives and memory. At the
bottom of the screen it tells you to press DEL to enter Setup. (Usually)
During this screen, you can press DEL and it will take you to the BIOS.
Wander around until you find the info on you CPU temp so you know how to get
there next time it dies. Press the keys required to exit this program and Do
Not Save any changes you may have made. The computer will reboot.
4. Minidump file:
To read this file takes a special program and that might be a bit of a
stretch to get you there.

Basically, I'd tell you to start with memory sticks and then move on to
other hardware to find the device causing problems, but these typically all
lead to STOP codes and you state you're getting gibberish. That made me
think it is overheating (power supply or CPU.) Unfortunately, it's probably
well past the warranty, but you did complain almost immediately and it has
yet to be fixed. Tell Dell to make it work or give you a new one. Dell
should have been able to read the MiniDump file and see what the error codes
were being sent out on the crash. If it's overheating or there is a short,
it may not get a chance to write the information. I think it's going to take
the dealer to fix this one. (But it doesn't sound like Dell is the place to
go.)

Hi Mark,

I tried to find one of those screens. There are two different things I can
go into - one of them is a Diagnostics tool but I dont think anything there
is specifically for the BIOS to see the CPU temp. The other one just asks
where you would like to boot the computer from - there is something within
there marked BIOS but I can't change it.

I guess I will try speaking to Dell tomorrow to see what else they can do.

Thanks

Jeannette
