When I fired up my machine today, a lot of the files
listings in Windows Explorer were not black, but blue.
Any ideas, anybody?

Blue text typically means that they are either compressed or
encrypted... Go to Folder Options => View => Advanced Settings.
Unselect the Show encrypted or compressed files in color option.
