when i attempt to boot my computer i get a message that states 'a problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer'. attempting to boot in the 'safe mode' gets the same screen. any suggestion please?

Try this:
If you just added a new piece hardware remove it. Otherwise, Boot off the cdrom with
your XP cd. when asked to setup or restore choose 'setup'. When asked again to setup or
repair choose 'repair previous install'. This will only repair system files and you will
not lose data.
