We had a 'coincidental' electricity cut off yeasterday for some maintenance
and when I went to restart my computer I got yhe following Blue screen.
0x00000024
(0x00190203, 0x86F45A38, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

Computer is a Dell Dimension Desktop XP3 Home edition. I had not connected
any new hardware or downloaded and software for quite a while. I had turned
the Computer off prior to the eectricity being turned off and had turned the
computer off at the mains plug as per electricity boards advice.

I did try and use the installation disk yesterday to see if any repair could
be carried out. I would prefer not to lose all my data. I got it to boot up
from CD and ran chkdsk. It checked the disk but gave me no indication whether
there was an error or whether repair was attempted. I still got the blue
screen straight afterwards. It will not allow me to start in safe mode or
last known configuration either, it just goes blue again if i try.
Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Is the computer functioning at all? If so, you will have to download the
"Windows Debugging Tool" from the following site @windows:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/Debugging/default.mspx

make sure that you verify if you are running a 32bit or 64bit version before
download, because they are different. This link will help you if you dont
know. Click on the "Debugging Tools and Symbols: Getting Started" link within
this site prior to download because it contains tips and presentations on how
to use the Debugging tool once downloaded. Basicly, this tool will decode
your minidump files,(which are created during "blue screen"), and with the
info you will be able to research what is causing problem (system,
drivers,etc....). Once you know the exact cause of problem, you will be able
to figure out what the next step is to resolve issue.

I eventually fixed the issue-at least temporarily. I had a little help from
the Dell forum. I basically took the dubious disk from my Dell and placed it
as a slave in another working Dell. This immediately automatically ran chkdsk
and after a lot of deletions and bad sector info scrolling across my screen
for about 10 mins it allowed me to transfer data to the working Dell's disk.
I then put the iffy disk back in the original Dell and it now works normally.
I am really just waiting for it to fail and then will renew the disk. It used
to run chkdsk every time it started automatically without ever fixing
anything, so it appears the disk is so damaged that even chkdsk wouldn't work
properly unlike on my other Dell. anyhow, its over 7 years old, so now i just
routinely back up anything important, (something i hadnt really done properly
before) and will look out for a new disk in due course.
thanks for responding.

glad to hear that it is working...even temporarily...one last thing....have
you tryed System File Checker (SFC), and if so did it work? This checks your
OS files and usually repairs alot of common errors....If you didnt try it yet
and hopefully it works if you do try, (depending on how corrupt OS is), then
here are steps:

click "start" button
scroll to "accessories"
right-click "command prompt"
click "run as"
choose "administrator"
when command prompt window opens, type "sfc\scannow"

this will initiate scan which will attempt to fix OS and notify of attempts
that are unsuccessful. In most cases, if system not to damaged, it will
repair more than "dskchk".
