hey, recently i have been getting the blue scren virus a lot.....i had tried
running spyware adn virsu checks (AVG Free) but it never finishes. I have
also tried instaling service pack one but that also never finishes. I have my
computer doing weekly defrages so i do not think that is the problem. I am at
the stage when i think i need to completly re-install everything.....please
cna i have some advice, if i do have to re-install everything how do i do
that? - i still have all needed disks....

Big Dave

p.s. i hope this is the right forum, if it is not i appologies...

You could either visit a "Hijack This" forum, and do everything they tell
you to do, which could take days, or you could back up your important info
and reinstall Vista. Reinstalling Vista is a good option if you are
confident that you can reinstall any 3rd party software that you paid for.
If you do choose to reinstall Vista, when you get to the option to format,
don't choose quick format, since a full format checks for faulty sectors in
the drive.

Big Dave,

Blue screens are usually caused by a hardware problem. Run some
diagnostics on your hardware components and see what you come up with.
Go to Control Panel and click on Problem Reports and Solutions and
check to see if you have any entries there that could lead you to an
application causing the problem. Also, check your Event Viewer for problem
listings.
The next time you experience a blue screen you should write down the
error number. Post back to your original thread and list the error code.

ok, i looked there and it has listed a hardware probelm

Problem caused by computer hardware

This problem was caused by an unrecoverable hardware error that caused the
operating system to stop functioning.

Troubleshooting

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have received this error more than once, it could indicate a serious
problem with your computer. We recommend that you do the following:

Back up your files to avoid data loss in case of a complete hardware failure.
Contact the original manufacturer of your computer to determine the specific
component which is failing.
Additional technical information

Although we know the problem is caused by a hardware component, the error
report does not contain enough information to tell us the specific component.
It is likely that the problem is being caused by one of the following
computer components:

Random Access Memory (RAM)
System board
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Power supply

there is also one casue by hard disk drive error

Problem caused by a hard disk drive error

Windows was temporarily unable to read your hard disk drive. This problem is
general in nature and we are unable to determine the specific cause of the
problem from the problem report. In most cases this problem is temporary and
can be ignored.

Common causes of this problem include:

Large file transfers from secondary media, such as an external hard drive,
to a local hard drive.
The loss of power to a hard disk drive that causes inconsistent data sectors.
Problems entering Hibernation or Standby Mode.
Hard drive lag caused by filter drivers, such as virus scanners.

One the pices of advcie is to run a hard disk drive error checking tool, i
have this shceudled for the next time i start my laptop on both the o.s. and
recory drives. Next time the blue screen error happens i will try and not
down the code

Thanks,

Big Dave

ok, i have now run error-checks on both drives. I tried again to instal SP1
and it seem to have worked. I will wait and see what happens but in the mean
time I am stil interested to hear any respones.

thanks
