When a friend powers up his pc the Windows logo flashes up then he gets the
dreaded BSOD along with the following message:
Stop: 0x0000008e (0xc00005, 0xbf803eb6, 0xf77417c4, 0x00000000)
Win32k.sys – address bf803eb6 base at bf800000, Datestamp 47e0e106
The pc is a Dell Dimension 9150 (purchased 25/11/2005) running XP, Office
2003 and Norton 360. No changes have been made to it regarding h/w other than
attaching a router and printer. No USB memory sticks or other devices have
been plugged in.
I’ve tried the various suggestions in previous posts; check pc is not
overheating, clean dust and dirt out, re-seated all connections and
components without success.
I’ve gone into the Boot menu using PF12 then “Boot to Utility Partitionâ€
(where is this Partition?) and run all the tests repeatedly without any
errors occurring.
Thinking there was a problem with Windows, I tried using the Dell supplied
Windows reinstallation disc having changed the BIOS to boot from CD. This
throws up an error saying that it can’t find the hard drive. This implies
there’s a problem with the HDD or its controller, however all the Boot
Utility tests run without error.
I don’t have a spare HDD I could try and am reluctant to go out and buy one
unnecessarily.
I can’t even get into “Safe Mode†from the Boot menu to look at Device
Manager or anything else.
Where do I go from here?
