Blue Screen/shut down

Bought Dell Dimension 8300 in Jan. 04, since Feb. Blue
Screen comes up about 8 times so far, freezes
everything. Dell Techs say: it's corrupt, have to
reinstall windows, back up data, maybe it's spyware,
maybe it's driver, maybe not defragmenting enough (!!?),
yet they have no qualified tech in Philadelphia I can
take it to and pay to fix it, despite full warranty. I'm
no tech and I don't wanna erase everything by myself.
Last time it froze to blue screen while typing password
in Yahoo mail. WTF. Kate.

What is the error message on the blue screen?

What is the error message on the blue screen?
"A problem has been dettected and windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error
screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears
again, follow these steps:
Run a system diagnostic utility supplied by your hardware
manufacturer. In particular, run a memory check and
check for faulty or mismatched memory. Try changing
video adapters.
Disable or remove any newly installed hardware and
drivers. Disable or remove any newly installed
software. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or
disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to
select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe
Mode.
Technical information:
STOP: 0x000000007F (0x0000000000...etc
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical Memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support
group for further assistance."

Hello Kate
I have a few ?'s
Have you downloaded and new drivers lately?

Have you been to Windows Update and download all the updates.
www.windowsupdate.com

Do you have more then 1 RAM stick installed?

Do you know what kind of video card you have.

This is sounding like a hardware problem, but I have a couple of things to
try just in case.

Do a System File Check
Start>Run>(type) cmd (enter)>(type) sfc /scannow (enter) (notice the space
between sfc & / )

Have you checked for any malware or adware lately.
Download, Update & Run
www.spysweeper.com

Not sure what a driver is, but I'd say no. Video card,
128MB DDR NVidia GeForce TX 5200 graphics card (same as
video? I don't do gaming), did the Systems File Check,
did spysweeper (first time ever), two of 25 were adware
(Alexa Toolbar and SmartTags), rest were cookies. So, I
will go to bed now, 11PM in Philly, I'll check if you
have a response tomorrow and thank you for your
assistance. If BlueScreen comes up again, I shall try
you guys again. Thanks, Kate.

Kate
Post back if you still have trouble.

Drivers are coded files that come on the installation disks with hardware
such as printers, video cards, scanners, ect.
You have to install drivers in order for hardware to work.

That is a nice video card hope that isn't causing any problems.

Be sure to go to the Windows Update site and download all the updates.

Test your memory I just had the same problem with my 8300, tech had me
reload xp 3 times still had problems, ran a program call memtest-86 v3.0
(you can google it) download it put it on a floppy and reboot your system
the program will self start if you get any errors with in a few hours (I ran
it over night had 3,000 errors by morning). Put in new memory. I did all is
well

PS my started in dec till a month ago, don't use the mem test on the dell cd
it sucks

Greetings. Blue Screen just came up again.
(0x0000007F...) I was looking at various websites on
nature photos all evening and it stopped in the middle of
clicking onto another. A couple things I neglected to
respond last time: I have 1024MB DDR SDRAM at 400MHz,
don't know if that means more than 1 stick ram. I do
windows update whenever the box comes up, but I will go
into their site and update again, in case I missed
something. I did install a Canon i960 printer and
scanner, which came with the computer, so I guess there
was a driver installed.

This time I took a photo of the blue screen, I just wish
I knew where in Philadelphia to take it. Going to bed
now, will check in again. I can be reached at
(e-mail address removed). Thanks, Kate.

a.. Stop 0x7F messages are typically due to defective, malfunctioning, or
failed memory hardware. If you added new hardware recently, remove and
replace it to determine if it is causing or contributing to the problem. Run
diagnostics software supplied by the system manufacturer to determine if the
component has failed.
b.. Running the CPU beyond the rated specification, known as
"overclocking," can cause Stop 0x7F or other error messages due to heat
buildup. When diagnosing problems on overclocked systems, first restore all
clock and bus speed settings to the manufacturer recommended values to
determine if this resolves the issues.
c.. The problem might also be due to cracks, scratched traces, or
defective components on the motherboard. If all else fails, take the system
motherboard to a repair facility for diagnostic testing.
d.. Stop 0x7F messages can occur after installing incompatible
applications, drivers, or system services. Contact the software manufacturer
about possible Windows XP specific updates. Using updated software is
especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus
scanners, and CD mastering tools.

If you have 1024mb Ram then you will have 2 sticks more then likely, I would
pull one out at a time and start it up and run it to see if that is the
cause.
I would say bad RAM or a corrupt hardware drive before I would worry about
taking to a shop, it is easy to pull the ram out and check.

Arghh! I just downloaded Memtest-86 I don't know how
many times, on my system and a CD, "Tommy" said it was a
solution. I could not seem to run it, and I couldn't
figure out how to open it. Reason I did that is I just
got off phone with d-Dell, they ran a memory test,
passed, he transferred my call to some woman who was
going to help me save all files so they could dump and
reload, but, after next tech,...disconnected, call and
wait and next tech said they don't do that, they don't
show people how to save files,... back to zero. [Last
time I took an 800 number from them where they wanted
$800 to $2900 to "recover" in order for me to download
whatever I have put in since January.] Reason I called
them is I tried to open up the tower, I couldn't, and
couldn't find info in manual of where to pull, afraid I
would mess up my useless warranty so I called them.
Hah. I thought they would tell me how to open it up and
tell me what a RAM looks like or motherboard. I bought
what I thought was enough power to do a lot of photos and
maybe get a website. Dell told me they have NO computer
mechanics in the US. That gives me a big hint for the
next time. Anyhow, I am at your mercy, Microsoft.
Computers are still Model T's of the car industry I take
it and getting someone to really Know whasup is a gift.
And so, Haus, I'll leave you with a saying from Tavis
Smiley. "You can't teach what you don't know, and you
can't lead where you don't go."

Kate
Here is a link that will take you to a Dell site where you can download or
view a manual that will show you how to open the case and pull a ram stick.
Take one stick out and then put it back together and run it for a while and
see if you still get the blue screen.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/en/index.htm

Here is a possible fix if you know when the problem started you could have
downloaded a driver or program that is causing the problem, you can do a
system restore back to before the problem started.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

If it is a hardware problem this will not fix it.(hardware = memory,
motherboard, network card, ect.)
If it is a software problem this will fix it.(software = printer, scanner
driver or other driver, or program that has been downloaded from the web or
a disk)

Driver Definition = A piece of software that tells the computer how to
operate an external device, such as a printer, hard disk, CD-ROM drive, or
scanner. For instance, you can't print unless you have a printer driver.
Hard disk drivers are invisible files that are loaded into memory when you
start the computer, while scanner drivers are usually plug-ins accessed from
within a particular application.
