after windows loads, no desktop just plane blue screen with the use of the
mouse.
Can access everything but only with "task manager".
This happened after a virus scan.
Thanks for all suggestions!

It sounds like the virus scan found something. There is probably a note of
what was found and removed in the log files for your antivirus program.
Whatever it was had altered your user account and removing it, left a
partially working account.

Things to try:
Try Control Panel> User Accounts. Create a new account. Log off and then
try to log on with the new user account. Desktop still missing? If no,
transfer your data from the old account to the new one. Use new account
from now on.

If no luck, you could try a repair of XP. How you would run the repair
depends on how (and from what) your copy of Windows was originally
installed. For a retail copy:

If Windows was provided by the computer manufacturer, check your system
documentation for directions on using any of the available repair methods
that the OEM provided.

Try using System Restore to return your system to the most recent
restore point that is prior to the incident with the virus scan.

Good luck
