Blue screen of death

Yvonne

This has happened to me twice in the last few days. I have uninstalled
programs in which I don't use any longer.

But I can't seem to my memory availability on my computer. If I look into
system it only tells me how much I have. I want to know how much is
available and how much virtual memory I have.

Is there anything I can be doing to keep this from happening in the future?
Does it mean that I need to purchase more memory?

Thank you in advance for any and all assistance in this matter.

Blue screens are seldom memory problems. It would simply tell you that it
was increasing your Virtual Memory.
You probably have a corrupt driver for one of your hardware devices. The
blue screen will probably mention the name of the file. Search for it, and
rightclick it to see who made it. This might help you identify the problem
hardware device.

It just tells me it is making a physical memory dump. And that if it
continues to happen, to make sure and uninstall recent programs. But I
haven't installed anything in a very long time. So I am uninstalling unused
programs.

I will stare at the screen next time and see if it does say anything about a
particular file.

Thank you Mark.

It tells me it is beginning to dump physical memory. I didn't notice
anything in which it said a program. But it did say to uninstall most recent
program installed. I don't remember even what that was, because it has been
so long ago since I have installed anything on it.

I will look closer next time in case it does tell me what it is that is
corrupt.

Thank you Mark.

Hi Yvonne,

What other errors might you also be getting when you boot up the
computer? Have you been running Disk Cleanup on a regular basis?

I don't get boot errors. This is the only error and it has happened twice in
the last few days. Today being one of them. I have disk cleaned up today,
and defragged about a week ago.

Thank you

Mark,
I ran the eventvwr.msc and this is what I found:
APPLICATIONS:
MSSQL$MSSMLBIZ
and
APPLICATION ERROR

FOR SYSTEM:
DCOM
and
Service Control Manager

Thank you

It's only a guess, since you haven't said yet, but this looks like you have
Works installed (SQL error) or perhaps an older version of the Office Suite.
and on that assumption, I would say some app,( or file it is loading,) may
be corrupt. I would try to eliminate anything that is starting up. Look on
the startup tab when you run the command:
msconfig

Look for anything from works or office to uncheck as a test. The start menu
also has startup folder to look at.

It might help if we could be a bit more precise as to what exactly is your
problem at this time...

1. Are you indicating that when you boot your PC (and you might offer some
details about the make/model of your machine and its components) you get the
dreaded "BSOD" and the system will not boot? It is no longer functional?
What exactly is happening?

2. Before this problem arose, was the system functioning OK? Booted without
incident and functioned without any problems?

3. Do you have any clue as to what might have caused your present problem?
Any hardware changes? Software/configuration changes that you may have made
that triggered the problem?

4. Why are you (apparently) concerned with "memory availability on my
computer. I want to know how much is available and how much virtual memory I
have."? Of what significance is all this? What makes you think this is a
"memory" problem?

It's difficult, if not impossible, as this point to diagnose precisely
what's causing your problem, i.e., whether it's hardware-related or merely
some corruption of your XP operating system (OS). I'm leaning toward the
latter and if that's the case you should be able to restore your system to a
functional state.

But please, provide more details as to the precise nature of your problem
and whatever details you can about your system so that we can have a better
understanding of what exactly is going on here and more importantly possibly
furnish you with a course of action that will resolve your problem.
