My customer powered off his server without properly shutting it down first.
Now they are getting the "blue screen of death", "INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE".

Is it possible to perform some type of reinstall/repair install of the
Windows 2000 Server OS to
recover contents on the hard drive?

They are bringing me the computer, what are the first steps I should take?

yes scott have they got the ERD? - i.e the repair disk
even if they have not -when the server gets to u - insert
the win2k installtion cd rom -boot form it -if the server
bios allows u to do this -otherwise use the setup floppies-
then after u have loaded from the win2k cd rom you should
get the screen where it asks u for - repair or recovery
console - form here its your shout - i think with the bleu
screen best bet is go for R -repair then if u havent go
tthe ERD floppy jsut choose the option -that u dont have
the ERD and u want to use the cd rom to repair

Of course not, nor do they have a backup!!...actually they do have a backup,
from 2 years ago that I did, nothing since.

Anyway, thanks for the information. It is IDE and so far nothing has worked.
I installed it on another machine and I am copying the stuff off. Then I
will try Fixmbr. Chkdsk and Fixboot didn't help. If you know of anything
else I could try, even while it's hooked up to the other computer, please
let me know. Any utilities or anything. Thanks again.

hmm i c so what your syaing is that you took the hard disk
out and inserted it into another pc and u r copying the
data files off it? so once u got all the data files cant u
jsut do a reformat-reinstall?
