Lately when I have tried to scan my computer with my
McAfee virus program or Trend Micro's House Calls or the
on-line Symantic virus scanner, the scanning goes for a
while, and then it stops and a blue error screen appears.
The message says to avoid damage to my computer, it was
shut down. My Dell tech support FAQ section says it's
probably a problem with a newly installed driver. I
haven't installed any new drivers or any updates for many
months. I am running XP Home on a Dell Dimension
desktop. Any ideas?

I would try and restore to a time before this started
happening. It really sounds as though you may have a
virus, but that is just me. From the desktop go
START>CONTROL PANEL>PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE, then
click SYSTEM RESTORE on the upper left side. Go with
Restore computer to and earlier date(no sure about exact
wording, should be the default) and click NEXT. Pick a
date before this issue started on the calendar, you can
go back to a previous month if need be. FIles are safe,
but any downloads you installed on your computer will be
lost and you will have to reinstall them. If this does
not work, you can always UNDO this restore action when
the restore dialogue box appears and it will bring your
computer back to where you are now. If this does work, I
would definitely go to symantec\ and rerun their virus
scan program ONLINE. Hope this helps. Would appreciate
an email with the results if you have time to

That's part of the problem. System Restore won't work. I
posted a message several days ago, probably about 7 or 8
pages back now on this newsgroup, asking how this might be
fixed. It appears that many other people have the same
problem, and the solution Mr. Jones gave didn't work. I
think my next step will have to be to contact Dell phone
support as their e-mail support didn't help. Ideas?
