All of a sudden, when I try to connect to the Internet, my PC crashes and I
get a blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been
shut down to prevent damage to your computer".

The technical information reads:

"STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000001D, 0x822AB028, 0xEE74A44C, 0x00000000)

Does anyone know what this means, and more importantly how to fix it?

(I have already run virus scans and machine is coming up clear.)

This may not be the best place to ask this question, but if anyone has
suggestions on better groups to post to, then any suggestions would be
gratefully received.

Thanks,

Chris :-)

It's a status register dump. Written in Base16 or Hexadecimal
numbering. When XP Halts, it posts out these Register contents.
To average PC users it makes little sense. You have to cross
reference the Register codes to find out what occurred when it
happened. Microsoft has a Tech note on common codes:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_ogli.asp
There are also a number of websites that have additional help on
deciphering the Stop Codes.

All a computer can really do is simple arithmetic, add and subtract.

Research your Stop Error here:

If you recently updated your network card (or modem, since you didn't
say how you connect to the Internet) drivers, roll them back. If you
updated drivers from Windows Update, don't do that again.
