I have a small computer network at home. On the network are my
laptop (Dell Latitude running XP/Pro), desktop (Dell Dimension
running XP/Pro) and Printer (HP PSC 2510). The network router
is a Belkin router.. All connections are wired.

Lately, whenver, and only when, my desktop machine is turned
off, when I reboot my laptop, I will get after about 2 -3
minutes of uptime, a blue screen with the following message:

STOP 0x000000D1 DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Reboots have the same result. There is no message of interest
in the event logs (either System or Application).

If/When I turn my desktop back on again, the problem goes away.

Any ideas?

Is there a printer on the desktop to which the laptop is mapping to?

Nope - only printers are the network printer (no host
connection) and it's own locally attached printer.

Hi Dave,

The error message indicates a driver problem, so the only likely suspect is
the nic driver in the laptop. I would start there, check for updates. Is
there a problem when the laptop is not connected to the network?

I suspected it might be the wireless card in the laptop - take
it out - all is well - leave it in AND turn off the desktop,
and it crashes within minutes of boot. Was on version 3.05
and there were versions 3.06 and 3.07 available. 3.07 was MS
certified and 3.05 wasn't, so thought that was a good sign.
Download and installed it. But same as before; works great if
the desktop is up and bluescreens if it's down. There used to
be a printer on the desktop that the laptop used, but it was
replaced with the network weeks ago and I removed references
to the desktop printer.

It's driving me crazy why the state of my desktop affects the
laptop.

There are a lot of causes for this probem. Microsoft knows about a couple of them and actually has a hotfix for it. But you need to get in contact with them and maybe pay for it. (Dutch site: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...elp/fc8efbed-4ea6-4068-9f55-40801292ec6d.mspx)

I had the problem a couple of days ago after an harddisk format and reinstallation of xp and everything else. It drove me nuts but in the end it only had to do with the drivers. Probebly one of the folloing actions fixed the bug:

Driver installation of Creative SB Live soundcard (i also put the hardware out and in again)
Driver installation of Intel PRO/100 Network card

Keep us posted if you fixed it!
