I just put a new hard drive in and reinstalled windows xp home and for some
odd reason when I attempt to go into the control panel the computer crashes
with the blue screen. Other then this problem, the computer works fine.
There is no windows page after rebooting suggesting a solution...Help!
Marty

You need to provide the blue screen error message, "the computer crashes
with the blue screen" tells us nothing.

Marty

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Hope this helps.

Try to to Tab F8 on boot up then when you represented with the boot options
either select:

Last Good configuration ( Your most recent settings that worked)

Or try this:
Disable Automatic restart on system failure to capture the error message.
You can use Safe Mode Option (first on the menu) to log into safe mode that
you will be able and troubleshoot from there by accessing the Event Viewer
and see the log for error messages and you can copy & paste in your next post.

I do have spyware dr,I turned it off and did all the IE setting changes.
I'll download some of the programs you guys suggested to search for a virus
or malware but the computer has only been used for just over a week and
rarely online. I'll rearrange my RAM chips as well or replace them if they
turn out bad. Remember that I cant go to control panel so when you give
advice please tell me how to go somewhere without the control panel route..I
REALLY appreciate your help...I'll post after more tests..

Well, after 3 different virus scans and 3 malware scans there is nothing
found, I think its a hardware issue with the new hard drive or RAM. I'll do
the other tests you recommended and get back. Oh, the computer would crash
when I played Silent Hunter 4..Maybe ram?

Well, after 3 different virus scans and 3 malware scans there is
nothing found, I think its a hardware issue with the new hard drive
or RAM. I'll do the other tests you recommended and get back. Oh,
the computer would crash when I played Silent Hunter 4..Maybe ram?

Marty

My Dell 5150 has just crashed in a manner similar to Marty's description
except I was ejecting a disk from Drive D at the time:
I am unable to restart the PC (not a laptop).
I had just downloaded a video clip from You Tube on to a disk in Drive D. I
was then about ot eject the disk. I happened to notice that my screen was
listing two Drive D's. I clicked on the original icon & that's when the PC
shutdown although the disk was ejected.
I have tried shutting down & restarting the computer
Everytime I try to restart the PC I get a blue screen message saying " a
problem has been detected & Windows has shut down to protect the PC".It
further tells me to check for viruses, remove any newly installed hard drives
or hard drive controllers.Check my hard drive to make sure it is properly
configured & terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption &
then restart the PC.
Tech. Info:
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF88C2524, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I have not been able to do any of the above, partly because I dont have the
know-how & also because neither the mouse nor the keyboard works with that
screen.

When I start up the PC it gives me about 20 secs to choose an option such as
those listed below (the up/down arrows work for this)

Safe Mode
Last good Confiuration
Start Normally
If I select safe mode it briefly shows a list each line beginning something
like
multi(0)disk(0)partition
then the end of each line is a bit different
eg app patch
Windows system 32 drivers

And then the screen reverts to the original blue background fault msg I
quoted at the beginning.
I'm no expert! Can you help
