John

I have had a few shutdowns and BSOD with various messages. In event viewer
one surprise error seems to be linked to a scanner that I have un-installed:

"The Pacific Image Electronics USB Scanner service failed to start due to
the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it. "

I think I have removed all references to this - but obviously something is
making the PC look for it from time to time. any ideas?

Please post the complete Stop Error Bug Check Code.

For your Pacific Image Electronics USB Scanner service error use
Autoruns.

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from
Microsoft).
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from
starting,or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you
uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer
approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig..
Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an
item and select Search Online to get information about the item
selected.

Do you mean the info that gets dumped? If so I need to save it next time it
happens.

If you haven't done so already disable automatic restart on system
failure. This should help by allowing time to write down the STOP code
properly. Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select
Properties, Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart. Do not re-enable automatic restart on
system failure.

To eliminate the cause of the Event Viewer report use Autoruns as
suggested.

Thanks - it was already in the state that you suggested.
I have used Autoruns and have searched for Pacific Image but it isn't there.

I have also recorded this warning:

A request to suspend power was denied by winlogon.exe.

Ah! I have found a driver PIEUsb. I have unchecked its box.

John

What you will have found is the instruction to start the driver when you
boot, not the driver itself. What appears in Autoruns are all the
instructions to run drivers / software when you boot. You will have
removed the driver when you uninstalled the main software. It's worth
remembering the distinction as it is likely you will encounter the
problem again as it commonly occurs when you uninstall unwanted
software.
