Why is the icon in the system tray sometimes red and
sometimes blue? Does this indicate some required action?

It just indicates that someone has used Terminal Services related task (i.e.
Fast User Switching, Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance). Nothing to really
worry about, probably just a small bug in the MSAS.
