Blotchy, ghost-like hard-to-read

I don't quite know how to explain this, nor whether this is the right place
to be asking, but....

A few months ago, all the letters on my screen have gone from easy-to-read
black to a blotchy greyish blue. This occurs with Explorer, Excel and Word,
so I'm assuming it has something to do with XP (doesn't seem to be
software-related). It's rather irritating and hard on the eyes. Can anyonne
give me any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

What else changed?

Did you disconnect and reconnect the Video cable to make sure that it's
making good contact?

Change your screen resolution and see if you can improve the problem -
if not, do you have a monitor that you can borrow to check yours
against?

Thanks for the quick response. It's a laptop (Toshiba Dynabook). It appears
to be that only the letters that have changed. Photos, graphics etc. are all
okay.
