How can I stop that bloody dial-up connection box from appearing every few
seconds when I'm not connected to the net. It never used to do that. It's
getting on my tits.

I smell a rat. Have you checked thoroughly that you have not got spyware,
adware, Trojans, malware and all other parasites in your computer? Any one
of them may want to 'phone home' when the machine is booted up.

Bee.

I've wondered that. I have ad-aware. I've been getting a dramatic increase
in spam too.
Any suggestions?

Adaware, www.lavasoft.de and or SpyBot Search & Destroy, update before
running.
Get a decent Firewall, ZoneAlarm is free

Hmm I ran ad aware, updated it too. Found two data miners (Alexia and one
for Media Player). Got rid of them though I believe they're supposed to be
OK. Found one .scr virus that hadn't been activated. So... it looks like
that lot may not have been the problem.

Or you can try looking for another program running in your task bar down at the bottom right of your screen, next to your clock. MSN messenger has been know to do that . If you have an anti-virus, it's updater could be trying to log in as well. Try looking for those types of programs

And as said in the beginning, Run Ad-Aware.

Somehow the Internet properties box had had its little check changed to Dial
whenever a network connection is not present from its initial never dial a
connection.
