Hi -
I'm a handicapped artist who needs to sell my paintings by
displaying photos of them on the web.(Gotta repay the loans
and support myself.) This is my only source of income, so
how can I prevent the general public from right-clicking
(copying and saving) my images? I realize that there are
ways for people to get around anything nowadays, but even
if your idea deters just some of the people from ripping me
off, it might be worth trying. I don't want to use editing
software to watermark the photos. I would really appreciate
your help with this. Thank you and God bless.

I'm a photographer who has explored this problem so I feel qualified to
contribute.

1) a bit of Javascript programming can prevent people from right-clicking
your images
and saving them. However, Internet Explorer has a File-->Save feature which
I have tried
which will save the 'so-called protected' images as easily. Not to mention,
the right-click
trick doesn't help on a Macintosh.

2) the best way to discourage people from ripping you off is to make the
images so small
that it will be extremely difficult to make a reasonably sized print (which
of course will not
look like a painting with brush strokes and textures). I keep my web images
under 40kb (at 72ppi)
while it should take a 9-10 megabyte sized file (at 150 ppi) to create a
good print. It's highly
unlikely any sightless software (even Genuine Fractals) could 'manufacture'
enough of the right
pixels ... that an increase of over 400%! It's kind of like taking a
painting a whole house with
a bucket of paint made to cover a small bathroom .

3) why not use watermarking? Unless it's a cost factor which is
understandable.
