Hello and thanks in advance - I'd like to know what settings should be set to
block pop-ups and prevent sites like ShopNav.com from infecting my setup with
their search engine and making registry entries on my machine without my
knowledge. Can someone tell me what I should check/select in my setup?

To block popups use the Google Toolbar. It works great and it is free. For
hijackers, try using Hijack This! To keep spyware and aware off your
machine use Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware. Both absolutely free.
Run a firewall. Zone Alarm at www.zonelabs.com has a free version and it is
top notch. Download and run AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition from
www.grisoft.com. Check in Internet Explorer under Tools>Internet
Options>Security Tab>Internet Zone>Custom Level button. Make sure you
aren't allowing scripting as this is probably how a lot of this stuff can
sneak on board without you knowing about it. At least set the Java
Scripting and other Scripting options to Prompt. That way you will be
notified if some script wants to install and run and you can decide then if
it is something legitimate.

To protect against changes to your Registry, RegProt from DiamondCS can
alert you.
