Can anybody tell me how to block all incoming mail from
senders that do not appear in my 'contacts list'? This is
a security option that is available with hotmail, but as
far as I know it is not possible with outlook express.

Ask in an Outlook Express forum. This is an Microsoft Office Outlook forum.

Outlook Express is family of Internet Explorer and Outlook of the Office
family.

Here is the link for the right forum

Good Luck!

address when mailing)

There are third party addins to Outlook and OE that do that.
Search for keywords that include 'whitelist'.
I recall one called something like Qarb that looked good.

Also, another approach, the one I used, is to scan all incoming messages
while they are still on the server. I use MailWasher. It's doesn't
automatically integrate with my Address Book, so maintenance of the
'whitelist' is done manually, but it has other features that are nice.
And it's free and stable. I helps a lot with spam and viruses. You
can't get infected if you delete the messsage before you even download
it! It even generates 'bounce' messages to trick spammers into thinking
your email account is dead! (For all the good that does.. most spammers
use throwaway accounts and don't read bounces, but for the few that are
semi-legit, it helps)
