Blocking access to programs

Hi,

I've been asked if its possible to block users from accessing a certain
program on this computer on our home network.

Currently there is only one user account, and the guest account is switched
off

I was thinking a long the lines of creating a limited account for them to
use, which has no access to the program.

But how would I go about blocking access to the program, and would this work?


Any ideas?

Sure. Create your limited user account. Then find the application folder
that you want to block access to which most likely is in Program Files
Folder. In the properties - security of that folder remove if present -
users, everyone, authenticated users and leave administrators, system, and
any other user account that is not in the administrators group that you want
to access that application. Note however doing such for Internet Explorer is
not a good way to block internet access for a user.

To manage folder security in XP Home you need to boot into Safe Mode and
logon as administrator. You also want to give administrator a password as
commonly it is blank in XP Home and many use that as a backdoor into the
computer. Whatever password you give the administrator account be sure to
write it down and keep in a couple safe places. The link below explains how
to set NTFS/folder security settings and the hard drive needs to be
formatted with NTFS file system in order to set security on a folder.
