Blocked virus and bounced mail

I got an email that was obviously sent out by a virus today and Outlook 2002
SP-2 blocked assess to the movie0045.pif attachment. I tried to reply to the
sender and let them know they had a virus. But I got back this message from
their server, "554 TRANSACTION FAILED - Unrepairable Virus Detected. Your
mail has not been sent." My reply was to a netscape.net address and the
bounced message was from the AOL Postmaster so I'm assuming that error
message is saying I sent the virus not that it knows the address is
infected.

So how did I send the virus by simply replying? I replied to the message
again but then put my own address in the To field and it came through fine
without attachments or Outlook reporting that it had blocked any. What's
going on?

I'm on Windows XP Pro SP-1 and I use AVG Anti-Virus.

The fact that OL blocked an attachment does'nt mean that it contained a
virus.
Its simply OL blocking access to certain attachment types.
Any virus could equally be in the body of the msg. And as you don't appear
to have any AV software
you would'nt know.

Um, actually I said in the last line of my post that I use AVG Anti-Virus.
That's why I was confused. When you reply to a message that came with an
attachment, does Outlook include that attachment in your reply? I didn't
think that was the default behavior.

Sorry, did'nt have yr msg expanded to see the last line, my mistake
Its still possible that the body of the msg contained something also
There are also various settings in Options/Email for forward/reply that can
effect how the msg was treated

Hmmm, I don't have Outlook set to attach the original message on reply, just
to include the original message text (so that wouldn't include any attached
files). Oh well.
