My cable internet connection and email stopped working
yesterday 'no service available' and the cable technican
diagnosed it as a "blocked port" and said to bring the new
computer back to the store. The store says "Its a
software problem, we don't warranty that; you should
reinstall XP from CDs. Isn't there a way to unblock the
port short of reinstalling the entire XP system? What
caused the port to block? The store suggests getting a
third party firewall.

That's nonsense.
Obviously the cable technician don't know he/ she is talking about.

IF you don't run a web server and email server [ port 80 and 25
respectively ]
you should not have any problem accessing the web and emails from other
company,
unless you have a VERY strict firewall rules or Policy set by your admin
[in workplace normally]

Did you install a firewall by yourself ? What's the name of the s/ware ?
Also what browser are you using ? is it IE ?
if yes , try setting the Internet Security over in Tools -> Internet
options -> Security to DEFAULT.

One thing you can try, goto run -> type "cmd"
over in the black screen type in "ping www.mit.edu"

and post back what's the result.

I turned it on and just before I was going to put the
recovery CDs in I tried it again and now both the internet
and email work (IE and outlook). I assume it was not a
blocked port so now I don't have to do a recovery?? but I
would still like to know what to do next time. So far I
have not installed a firewall but we bought a wireless
router which I am told has one so I will install it
tonight. I would have assumed XP or Charter.com would have
their own firewalls to prevent blocked ports. The
Charter.com cable tech seemed knowledgable, he had me
running all sorts of cmd programs, ping, ipconfig etc
before claiming a blocked port. I'll try your suggestions
when I get home.
