I was just wondering if restoring a backup of the system
state ,providing the backup was done prior to
infection,would delete this virus?

Restoring from backup would most likely eliminate the virus, but unless
you take steps to block the worms behavior, you would most likely be
re-infected after coming back onto the network.

Be sure to take appropriate actions as outlined in the security bulletins to
mitigate the risks.

Install:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp
As soon as you can!

Get a firewall! You NEED one. There are several free ones, including
Sygate ( www.sygate.com )

Then go to WindowsUpdate to pick up the latest updates:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. (You should do this about once a month
anyway, at least)

More info about the worm:

You also need good antivirus software - for personal use, AVG 6.0 is free -
www.grisoft.com - set it to update daily.

AVG 6 is free. 7 is not. Personally, I'd spring for the full version.

Why not AVG 7.0?
What is the difference between AVG 6.0 and AVG 7.0?

Don't know where you got that file - go to www.grisoft.com and find the AVG
Free Edition link, fill out the form, and download the executable.

*.bin file (not *.exe).
